Scholarships
Essays, recommendation letters, test scores, transcripts...applying for scholarships can feel overwhelming. Here are some tips to help:
- Do keep a list of the activities, sports, and clubs you participate in while you’re in high school. List any awards you receive and offices that you hold.
- Do take the time to search for scholarships.
- Do make a copy of blank scholarship forms so that you can practice filling them out.
- Do make sure you read all of the application instructions carefully and do exactly as they say.
- Do have others review your essays. Ask a teacher, parent, guidance counselor, or other trusted adult to proofread it for you.
- Do start thinking about who you can ask to write recommendation letters for you. Be prepared to supply them with the list of activities you’ve participated in, and make sure you give them plenty of time to write the letter.
- Don’t wait until the day before the deadline to start working on your application. Most scholarships require essays and letters of recommendation that take time to gather. Treat scholarship applications like you would a very important class assignment by taking the time to make sure you do things right.
- Do contact your guidance counselor or SICAN if you need help writing essays or filling out applications.
